Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing DPI increase image resolution?

No. DPI is metadata that tells printers how many pixels to pack per inch. Changing it does not add or remove pixels — the actual image resolution stays exactly the same.

Which formats support DPI metadata?

JPG (via the JFIF density fields) and PNG (via the pHYs chunk) are supported. WebP DPI metadata cannot be written reliably through the browser canvas, so WebP inputs are exported as PNG with the requested DPI.

Why would I change DPI?

Some print services and publishing systems require a minimum DPI value (often 300) in the file metadata before they accept an image, even though the pixel count is what truly determines print quality.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The DPI metadata is written directly into the file bytes in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
